Discussions centered on collaborative efforts between the South African Police Service (SAPS), local businesses, and residents to create a safer environment for both the community and visitors.
Key points of discussion included increased visible policing patrols, particularly in high-traffic tourist areas such as the estuary mouth and boat launch sites. The CPF also reviewed the efficacy of existing neighbourhood watch initiatives and explored ways to expand their reach. Concerns were raised regarding petty crime and opportunistic theft, which tend to see a slight increase during peak holiday periods. The forum emphasised the importance of reporting all incidents, no matter how minor, to ensure accurate crime statistics and appropriate resource allocation.
Captain Sibusiso Nkosi, Station Commander of St Lucia SAPS, addressed the forum, highlighting the commitment of the police force to community safety. "Our partnership with the St Lucia CPF and residents is indispensable," said Captain Nkosi. "We are actively deploying additional resources and implementing proactive strategies to safeguard our community and ensure that visitors experience the beauty of St Lucia without incident. We urge everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately."
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to work hand-in-hand. Plans were laid out for a series of public awareness campaigns focusing on personal safety tips for residents and tourists, as well as encouraging greater participation in the neighbourhood watch programs.
