St Lucia residents and businesses are anticipating the commencement of a vital dredging project within the St Lucia Estuary, a move local authorities believe will significantly benefit both the town's eco-tourism sector and the delicate ecosystem of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. The uMkhanyakude District Municipality, in collaboration with conservation bodies, has finalised plans for the initiative, which is expected to address long-standing concerns regarding siltation and its impact on boat access and aquatic life.
The project's primary objectives include deepening key channels within the estuary to facilitate improved access for tour boats, which are a cornerstone of St Lucia's tourism economy, offering visitors unparalleled opportunities to witness hippos, crocodiles, and diverse birdlife. Beyond tourism, the dredging is also crucial for enhancing the estuarine environment, promoting better water circulation, and supporting the myriad species that depend on the system, including juvenile fish and crustaceans that are vital for the broader marine food web.
Councillor Thandiwe Mkhize, Ward 1 Councillor for St Lucia, emphasised the project's dual benefits during a recent community meeting. "This dredging is not just about making it easier for tourist boats; it's a critical investment in the health of our estuary, which is the heart of our community and the gateway to iSimangaliso. A healthier estuary means more vibrant wildlife, better fishing opportunities, and a stronger economy for all our residents," she stated. Councillor Mkhize also confirmed that environmental impact assessments have been rigorously conducted to ensure the project adheres to the highest ecological standards.
Work is slated to begin in the coming weeks, with minimal disruption to daily activities and wildlife expected.
