St Lucia Clinic, serving the gateway community to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, has officially rolled out a new, comprehensive diabetes screening and awareness programme. This initiative, which began on Monday, aims to provide accessible testing and education to residents, focusing on early detection and management of Type 2 diabetes. The programme was developed in response to a noticeable increase in diabetes-related health issues reported at the clinic and within the uMkhanyakude District Municipality.
The free screenings, available every weekday morning, include blood glucose tests, BMI assessments, and educational sessions on healthy eating and active lifestyles. Clinic staff emphasised the importance of these services, particularly for a community whose diet can often be influenced by readily available convenience foods and whose daily routines might not always include sufficient physical activity. The clinic is also working with local community leaders to disseminate information about the programme and encourage participation, especially among older residents and those with a family history of diabetes.
Sister Thandiwe Zulu, Head Nurse at St Lucia Clinic, highlighted the critical need for proactive health measures. "Our community's health is paramount, and we've observed a worrying trend in undiagnosed or poorly managed diabetes," she stated. "Given our unique environment and the impact of tourism on local livelihoods, it's easy for personal health to take a backseat. This programme is designed to be convenient and comprehensive, ensuring that our residents have the tools and knowledge to live healthier lives and prevent serious complications."
The initiative is expected to run for the next three months, with plans for extension based on community uptake and resource availability. Residents are encouraged to visit the St Lucia Clinic during operating hours for more information and to participate in the free screening. Early detection and intervention remain key to combating the rising prevalence of diabetes in St Lucia.
